The 47th Chennai Book Fair, an annual event that every book lover in the city looks forward to, will be opened by Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday at the YMCA in Nandanam.
Until January 21, 915 stalls will sell books, both fiction and nonfiction, primarily in Tamil and English.
This year, in addition to the normal publishers, 27 new members of the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (Bapasi) have been assigned stalls, and non-members who approached Bapasi have also been accommodated.
The prison department, as in past years, will feature a kiosk where visitors can donate books to the library at Puzhal Central Prison.Apart from historical novels, Bapasi anticipates strong demand for Sahitya Akademi award-winning literature.
In 2023, Devibharathi's 'Neervazhi Paduum' got the Sahitya Akademi prize. "Since it is Kalaignar's centenary year, we expect high sales of his books," said M Palani, who served on the Bapasi committee last year.
Chief Minister M K Stalin will deliver Muthamizharignar M Karunanidhi Porkizhi prizes to writers and publishers, while school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi will also be present at the inauguration.
Every day of the festival will feature literary events.
Meanwhile, the Chennai International Book Fair, which was hosted in conjunction with the annual book fair last year, has been relocated to Nandambakkam this year and will be held on January 16 to 18 at the Trade Centre.
